Question: The four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, are often portrayed alongside a particular creature (symbol). What are these creatures and what do they symbolize?
Answer: A man, a lion, an ox and an eagle.
Matthew is represented as a man, because his Gospel focuses on the humanity of Jesus.
Mark is represented as a lion. The lion represents royalty. Mark's Gospel focuses on the royalty of the Son of God.
Luke is represented as an ox. An ox was often used as sacrifice. Luke's Gospel focuses on Jesus as the Paschal Victim.
John is represented as and eagle. "...his gaze pierced further into the mysteries of Heaven than any other man." His Gospel focuses on the word and lessons of Jesus.
The creatures are described in Ezekiel (1:5-11) and again in Revelation (4:6-8)
