The readings and the Priest preaching about the Gospel help us to grow in our faith. It is now our turn to declare that we believe in God as He has been revealed to us in the Scriptures and through the teaching of the Church. Our Profession of Faith is called the Nicene Creed. It proclaims the core doctrines of the Christian faith, especially the Trinity, and that Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead that we might have eternal life.
As we stand and recite the creed it offers us the opportunity to reflect on its meaning and celebrate our belief and absolute trust in God. We are declaring our belief “In one God” and “In One Lord Jesus Christ” and “In the Holy Spirit” and “one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.” We should bow before reciting the words “and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.”
The Liturgy of the Word concludes with the Prayers of the Faithful. We are praying for various people and their needs. This form of prayer is called intercessory prayer (we are interceding with God on behalf of others). The priest invites the prayers of the faithful and after each prayer concern we respond with “Lord, hear our prayer.”
This concludes the “Liturgy of the Word” and we now prepare ourselves to offer the Eucharistic sacrifice in the “Liturgy of the Eucharist.”
